Brockport regains SUNYAC lead, downs Buffalo State, 94-83

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – In a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) battle, The College at Brockport men's basketball team came out on top over a tough Buffalo State squad on Saturday, 94-83.

 

The Golden Eagles improve to 12-3 on the year and 7-1 in league play while the Bengals fall to 10-5 and 4-5 in the SUNYAC.

 

In a battle of top SUNYAC teams, the Golden Eagles controlled the tempo of the contest, and by the 13:19 mark, the score of the matchup as well. A Devonn Gavin triple followed by an old-fashioned three-point play from Justin Summers pushed the Green and Gold to a 15-13 advantage.

 

Brockport briefly relinquished their lead, but it was short-lived, as a Hamed Shamseldin three-point play gave the Golden Eagles a 25-21 lift. A 7-0 Green and Gold run with back-to-back layups from Clifton Lyerly and a Gavin trey helped to build the Brockport cushion. By the 3:01 mark the Golden Eagles hit a double-digit lead after Matthew Smith weaved through the lane to post a 38-28 advantage.

 

Using a 6-0 run to close the half, with scores from Smith, Shamseldin and David Clark, Brockport took a healthy 48-32 lead into the break.

 

At the half, Shamseldin led the Green and Gold, pouring in 11 points and picking up four rebounds. Lyerly, and Smith each netted eight, with Gavin adding seven. The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent from the field while holding the Bengals to just 36.4 percent.

 

Head coach Greg Dunne's squad fought to build on their lead in the second half, and by the 11:34 mark, pushed to a 20 point advantage after a pair of scores from Gavin and a Clark layup made the count 70-50.

 

A tough Buff State squad couldn't be counted out, as they worked to chip away at the Brockport lead. A 9-1 Bengal run cut their deficit to 12, but the Golden Eagles were strong from the field, and the charity stripe, as Shamseldin used both to boost Brockport back out to a 92-76 edge. Brockport held on for the strong win, and a Montgomery Stroman dunk to close play made the final count 94-83.

 

Leading the way for Brockport was Shamseldin who netted 22 points and grabbed six boards. Lyerly and Gavin each chipped in 17, with three rebounds for Lyerly and three steals for Gavin. Smith also worked into double figures with 10 points and two assists.

 

On the night, the Green and Gold shot a solid 50 percent from the field. The tenacious Brockport defense forced 19 Buff State turnovers, which they turned in for 23 points. The Golden Eagles outmatched the Bengals in the paint as well, with a 62-42 advantage, and picked up 18 fast break points.

 

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Jan. 20 when they host Plattsburgh State, with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
