FREDONIA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team picked up a strong State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win on Friday, downing Fredonia, 88-59.

The Golden Eagles improve to 11-3 on the season and 6-1 in league play while the Blue Devils fall to 6-9 on the year and have a 3-5 mark in conference.

It took head coach Greg Dunne's squad the start of the contest to get established, but Brockport quickly worked out to a nine point lead just six minutes into the game. Behind a 10-2 run, with scores from Justin Summers, Matthew Smith and a pair of buckets from Clifton Lyerly, the Golden Eagles pushed out to a 19-8 lead.

Working to keep their foot on the pedal, Brockport continued to push on the offensive end, and reached a double-digit lead by the 11:34 mark after a David Clark layup and a Devonn Gavin bucket made the count 24-13. The Golden Eagles fought on the defensive end as well, forcing seven Blue Devils turnovers.

Brockport took their largest lead of the contest into the half, as Hamed Shamseldin converted on an and-one play to give the Green and Gold a 50-33 lead at the break.

Lyerly led all scorers after the first half with 13. Smith chipped in nine points with five rebounds and three assists while Shamseldin added eight. As a team, the Golden Eagles shot a hot 58.1 percent from the field and converted on 5-of-8 threes.

The strong play continued for the Green and Gold in the second half, and it didn't take long for the Brockport lead to grow. A 10-0 swing, with back-to-back triples and a pair of scores from Smith and Shamseldin swelled the Brockport advantage to 72-48 with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest.

Several players came off the bench in the closing minutes of the contest, and the strong Brockport play did not falter. Jon Carnegie got the 11-2 scoring streak started with a layup, while Malick Sylla followed it up with a trey. Mitch Cote worked into the scoring column after doing work in the paint, and a Jacob Peterson free throw to close the contest made the final score 88-59.

Four players finished the night with double-digits, with Lyerly leading the way with 16. Shamseldin added 15 and four boards, while Smith chipped in seven points, snagged seven rebounds and dished five assists. Gavin also turned in double figures with 10 to go with five steals. 13 Golden Eagles turned in points in the victory.

Brockport had a strong defensive showing, forcing 13 turnovers, which they used for 19 points. The bench contributed 37 points in the win while the team shot an impressive 57.1 percent from three-point range.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Jan. 14 when they return home to host Buffalo State in SUNYAC action.
