KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Albion College wasn't in the mood to let another game slip away.
After second half leads evaporated in losses to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals last week, Jason Zahran's basket with 19.5 seconds left was the difference as the Britons hung on for a 67-66 Kalamazoo College inside the Anderson Athletic Center.
Albion trailed 35-29 at halftime, but impressive ball movement on offense sent the Britons on a 21-6 run over the first six minutes of the second half. Darius Branch produced 11 of his team-high 19 points during the spurt, and Aquavius Burks chipped in with five.
Zahran scored a pair of layup as Albion seized its largest lead of the night, 62-50, with less than six minutes to play.
"Our team is getting better each game," Head Coach Jody May. "We played very well in spurts, but our challenge is to do it for 40 minutes. We needed this win for our psyche. I'm hoping this win can jump start us for the next game."
Albion was unable to put the Hornets away, however, as it made one of its next four shots and turned the ball over twice. Kalamazoo gained a 66-65 lead when Josh Whitney hit a pair from the line with 43 seconds remaining.
Branch led all players in the game with 19 points, while Burks finished with a season-high 16 and Zahran finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Bench players Ben Reiter and Josh Miller produced 12 points apiece for Kalamazoo.
Albion (4-10 overall and 1-2 against MIAA rivals) returns home Saturday night for a 7:30 game against Adrian College.
