An unselfish and exceptional first half from the Hope College men's basketball team paved the way for a 97-76 win against Olivet on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Baskets from 11 different players and assists from eight different ones propelled the Flying Dutchmen to a highest-scoring first half of the season and a commanding 54-22 halftime lead.

Hope (9-4 overall) shot 65.5 percent from the field in the first half (19-of-29), including 56.3 percent from 3-point range (9-of-16). The Flying Dutchmen totaled 13 of their season-high 21 assists before halftime.

The effort helped Hope to complete the first week of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play with a 2-0 league record. The Flying Dutchmen are tied for first place in the MIAA standing with Alma and Calvin.

Senior guard Chad Carlson of Rockford, Michigan (Rockford HS) led a balanced scoring effort with 15 points. He made four of Hope's 13 3-pointers that was two shy of the team's DeVos Fieldhouse record.

Senior forward Harrison Blackledge of Canton, Ohio (Hoover) chipped in 13 points.

Junior guard Dante Hawkins of Holland, Michigan (Holland) added 12 points and four assists.

Sophomore center Robert McGivney of Burr Ridge, Illinois (Timothy Christian) netted a career-high 10 points off the bench against Olivet (5-8, 1-1 MIAA).

Senior forward Cody Stuive of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) had nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Hope returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 11 against Alma. Tipoff is 8 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse.
