GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A late 8-0 run to break a tie game helped Gwynedd Mercy defeat Keystone, 88-74, and win their fifth-straight contest in the process.
Leading most of the contest, the Griffins (10-2, 4-1 CSAC) saw the Giants finally take their first lead of the game with 6:41 remaining (62-61). Later, with the score now tied at 65-65, GMercyU put together eight points in a row to take an eight-point lead with 3:09 to play. Going 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch would help ice the Griffin victory.
Arron Goodman scored 20 of his season-high 28 points in the second half on 10-of-15 shooting including two big three-pointers, one of which came in the game-changing run late in the second. Cedric Elleby added 23 points and a game-high 14 rebounds along with five blocks for his third double-double on the season. Courtney Cubbage also had double figures in points (11) and rebounds (10) for his second career double-double. Rip Engel contributed 13 points and dished out seven dimes.
Tied at 6-6 early on, a three from Rich Dunham and later Cubbage would throw down a thunderous dunk off a steal to give GM a 15-10 lead in the first half. Later in the period, a pullup jumper from Manny Lopez capped a 7-0 spurt to give Gwynedd a double-figure lead (35-24). The Giants would close the half on a 7-2 run to close the gap to 37-31 at the break.
After the midway point in the second, Keystone's Deion Monroe would score 10-straight points, knocking down back-to-back triples and getting two layups to go to give the Giants their first lead. A bucket underneath from Drew Dietterich and two free throws from Goodman put Gwynedd back ahead before another three from Monroe would knot things up at 65-65. Goodman would hit twice again from the line to break the tie and would later hit a triple as part of that 8-0 run. He hit his second trifecta of the game with 1:46 from the top of the key for a 78-68 score.
Gwynedd Mercy shot over 45% in both halves and finished at a 30-for-64 clip (46%), while going 24-of-30 at the charity stripe. Goodman was a perfect 6-of-6 while Engel was 8-of-9 at the line. The team would have its largest rebound advantage of the season, 54-31, in the battle of the boards. Keystone (4-8, 1-5 CSAC) was 30-of-74 (40%) and 8-of-32 from beyond the arc.
The Griffins welcome Cabrini here on Monday in a CSAC Doubleheader starting with the women at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.
