BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Brockport men's basketball team moved to 9-2 on the season with their 79-73 victory over St. Lawrence University on Friday. The game marked just the second loss of the season for the Saints, as they fall to 9-2 overall.
After St. Lawrence jumped out to an early 8-3 lead, the Golden Eagles sprung into action, using a 23-1 run to take a commanding 26-9 lead. Jon Carnegie was a force during that run, scoring all nine of his first half points in that span, while adding four boards as well.
The Green and Gold kept up the pace for the remainder of the first half, using their stingy full court press to force nine Saints turnovers which resulted in 15 points off of turnovers.
Hamed Shamseldin was on fire from the field in the first half, leading all Brockport scorers with 15 points off six of nine shooting including two of two from beyond the arc.
The Golden Eagles would hang on to their halftime lead for the remainder of the game, never trailing after taking the lead 4:03 into the opening stanza. A late St. Lawrence run brought them to within three at 74-71, but it was to no avail as the Green and Gold were able to hang on for their ninth victory of the season.
Shamseldin was one of four double-digit scorers for Brockport on the day, leading the squad with 21 points. Devonn Gavin (17), Jon Carnegie (12), and Cordell Torres (10) all scored in the double digits as well.
As a team, Brockport shot the lights out from behind the arc, shooting 11-23 for a percentage of 47.8. The Green and Gold used 53 points from their bench, and turned in 25 points off turnovers in the contest. The Golden Eagles also edged the Saints in points in the paint, 28-26 and fast break points, 12-10.
They also played stingy defense, forcing 19 Saint turnovers, led by Torres who led the team with four steals. Torres also grabbed five rebounds, and was aided by Justin Summers who led the team with seven, as well as Carnegie and Marcus Blythers who combined for 12.
The Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround as they're back in action tomorrow, Jan. 7 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play against SUNY Geneseo, with the tipoff set for 2 p.m.
