Midulla, Noe Lead R-MC past York for Tourney Title

ASHLAND, Va. - Sophomore Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) and junior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) both tallied 13 points as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated York (Pa.) 69-62 Friday evening in Crenshaw Gymnasium in the championship game of the R-MC Coaches Tournament, sponsored by Kay Jewelers.

Midulla, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, had 12 of his 13 points in the first half, while Noe put up nine in the second half for the Yellow Jackets (6-5).

Junior Sean Ryan (Plainfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) hit a pair of three-pointers as the Yellow Jackets started the game on a 10-2 spurt. R-MC was up nine at 20-11 before a 6-2 run by the Spartans (7-4) cut the deficit to five at 22-17 with 6:45 left in the first half. Midulla hit two treys in a 6-1 run as the Yellow Jacket advantage grew to 10 at 28-18 with 4:40 remaining. R-MC would take a 37-29 lead to the locker room at the break. Midulla scored 12 of the final 15 points in the first half for the Yellow Jackets.

Senior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) hit a three-pointer to start the second half as R-MC took its largest lead to that point at 40-29. The Yellow Jackets were up 10 at 46-36 before three layups pulled the Spartans within four at 46-42 with 10:20 remaining. R-MC put together an 8-0 run, as freshman Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) made a layup, Noe converted a three-point play and Taylor drained a trey as the Yellow Jackets led 54-42 with 8:35 left. Sophomore Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) hit a three-pointer with four minutes left to give the home team a 16-point lead at 63-47. York rallied, using a 14-3 run to pull within five at 66-61 with 42 seconds left. Noe hit a pair of free throws and Midulla sank one foul shot in the final 32 seconds as the Yellow Jackets earned the 69-62 victory.

R-MC won its third straight game and has won six of its past eight contests.

Taylor, a member of the All-Tournament Team, finished with 10 points and three assists. Noe had seven rebounds to go with his 13 points. Senior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) had six assists and two steals, while Turner added five assists.

Junior guard Matt Scamuffo paced the Spartans with 22 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

In the consolation game, Johns Hopkins edged FDU-Florham 68-65.

Rounding out the All-Tournament Team were Sam Gordon of Johns Hopkins and Veon Lassiter of FDU-Florham.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 4, for a 7 p.m. home ODAC contest against Virginia Wesleyan in Crenshaw Gymnasium.
