Cortland Men Cruise Past Fredonia, 96-64

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland took a double-figure lead midway through the first half and was never seriously threatened after that as the Red Dragons defeated Fredonia, 96-64, in a SUNYAC men's basketball game at Corey Gymnasium.

Five players scored in double figures for Cortland (6-2, 3-1 SUNYAC), led by James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) with 20 points. He made 4-of-6 shots from 3-point range and also had three assists in 24 minutes of action.

Justin Cooper (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) finished with 16 points and team highs of seven rebounds and five assists. Carrel Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Deer Park (NY)) scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and matched Cooper with seven rebounds. Michael Kelly (Monroe/Burke Catholic) and Nicky Bonura (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) each added 10 points. Kelly also registered a team-best four steals, and Bonura was 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc.

Fredonia (3-6, 1-3 SUNYAC) was led by Richard De La Cruz with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Tommie Banks finishedwith seven points and four blocked shots and Dante Williams led the Blue Devils with eight rebounds.

Cortland shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and led 47-31 at halftime. The Red Dragons finished the game at 48 percent from the field, including 42 percent (14-of-33) from the 3-point arc. Fredonia shot 34 percent overall and 29 percent (7-of-24) from deep.

The Red Dragons went on a 18-5 run to turn a 18-13 lead into a 36-18 margin from the 11:12 mark to the 6:33 mark of the first half. Justin Rivera (Bardonia/Clarkstown South) scored all seven of his points during that stretch and finished the game 3-for-3 from the field.

Cortland's lead quickly grew to 23 points on a 9-2 run in the first three minutes of the second half. Morales made two treys and Joseph hit one to fuel that run. The Red Dragons' lead remained in the 20's and 30's the rest of the game.

Cortland will travel to St. John Fisher on Saturday, December 17, for a 4 p.m. non-league game.
