DANVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 3, 2016) – Behind a strong second half, Southern Athletic Association host and rival Centre pulled away from the Sewanee men's basketball team for a 71-63 win, Saturday, inside Alumni Gymnasium.
The win improved Centre to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in SAA action. Sewanee dropped to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in league play after its four-game winning streak was snapped.
After Centre jumped in front with an early 7-0 lead, Sewanee finally got its offense going. A traditional three-point play by senior Brody Stone opened a 5-0 run by the Tigers. Centre answered with a nine straight points which gave the Colonels a 16-5 lead with 14:46 left in the first half.
However, just when it looked like the Colonels would run away with their early advantage, Sewanee ended the first half on a 26-14 run. That gave the Tigers a one-point lead, 31-30, at halftime.
From there, Sewanee and the Colonels traded the lead four times in the first seven minutes of the second half. The Tigers' biggest advantage during that stretch was only four points after Leo Born hit a jumper with 16:05 to play.
With the score tied at 40-40 with 13:03 left, a layup by Perry Ayers sparked an 11-3 Colonel run over the next four minutes. That helped Centre take command of the game. Sewanee never pulled to within five points the rest of the contest.
Overall, Sewanee made 42.1 percent of its shots. The Tigers improved at the free throw line by making a season-high 90 percent of their foul shots. However, the purple and gold struggled from outside hitting only 25 percent of their three-point attempts.
Individually, senior Jorden Williams paced Sewanee with 21 points. Fellow senior Stone finished with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Guards Matt Gump and Tucker Sine led Centre as they combined for 26 points and 10 rebounds. The Colonels were also helped by 32 bench points, which included 14 from reserve Jacob Bates.
Sewanee returns to action Tuesday with a home game against in-state foe Maryville. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
