Anderson, Marymount roll past Wolverines for CAC-opening victory

More news about: Marymount

DOVER, Del. – Senior Michael Anderson posted a game-high 21 points to guide the Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team past Wesley College on Wednesday night, 73-62, to open up Capital Athletic Conference competition in the win column.

Anderson, who shot 7-for-8 from the floor including 3-for-4 from behind the arc, was just three points shy of matching his career high in points with 24 that he marked his freshman year in an 83-76 victory over Ferrum College.

Also notching a double-digit scoring night was junior Dimitri Rucker with 11 points, while needing just two more rebounds to seal up a double-double.

It wasn't just Anderson and Rucker though that found the bottom of the net in the matchup, seeing 11 different Saints register points in the contest. The variation kicked off the game with sophomore Brandon Rogers knocking down a jumper to give MU the initial 2-0 advantage.

Through the first half, the lead swayed back-and-forth eight times until a nine-point stretch for the Saints changed it for the final time to push a 24-17 advantage by the 6:16 mark. In the run, Rogers put up five points while Anderson and freshman Ibrahim Kamara added two points apiece.

Before the break, freshman Chauncey Pittman found sophomore Logan Cook for the inside finish to give the Saints a 33-27 lead at the half. Rogers led the way through the first 20 minutes with seven points.

Marymount got back to work in the second half, continuing to separate itself from the Wolverines, eventually building to its largest lead with 1:59 remaining in the game. In back-to-back offensive series, freshman Xavier Adams was strong in the paint, finishing a pair of layups and drawing the and-one for six points in less than 30 seconds to push a 16-point lead, 68-52.

Wesley would chip away a small portion of the deficit, but Rucker and Kamara put the finishing touches on the game with accuracy at the charity stripe and a layup in the final seconds.

The Saints shot 52.1 percent for the game, including 55.6 from behind the arc.

The men return home on Saturday, December 3 for another league tilt, hosting St. Mary's College of Maryland in the Verizon Sports Arena. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m., following the women's basketball game against the Seahawks.
