The 15th-ranked Hope College men's basketball team made a long trip to Cleveland worth the drive.
The Flying Dutchmen recorded an 85-72 win at John Carroll on Tuesday in a matchup of teams that reached the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament a year ago.
Hope improved to 4-1 overall with the nonleague victory in University Heights, Ohio.
Senior forward Harrison Blackledge of Canton, Ohio (Hoover) scored a game-high 32 points — his second 30-point game of the season.
Blackledge made his first nine field-goal attempts and finished the game 10-of-11 from the floor. He also went 10-of-13 from the foul line to go along with a game-high nine rebounds.
Junior guard Dante Hawkins of Holland, Michigan (Holland) chipped in 10 points against John Carroll, which fell to 1-3.
Senior forward Cody Stuive of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) and sophomore forward Teddy Ray of Fort Wayne, Indiana (Homestead) netted nine points apiece against Hope's opponent from the Ohio Athletic Conference.
The Flying Dutchmen never trailed after the 5-minute, 42-second mark of the first half.
Hope returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 3 when the Flying Dutchmen host Wisconsin-La Crosse in a 5 p.m. Youth Day game at DeVos Fieldhouse. There will be a free team poster giveaway and autographs after the game.
