CLAREMONT, Calif. – Following a stunning comeback victory against Cal Maritime on Friday, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team (4-0) delivered a blowout 101-56 victory on Saturday over Southwestern (Tex.) (2-3) in their final game of the David Wells Classic. The Stags overwhelmed the Pirates with their hot 3-point shooting, converting 16 attempts as a team to make 57.1 percent. CMS also dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Pirates 37-19.
Sophomore Evan Davis (CMC) scored a career-high 22 points, going 7-for-9 from the 3-point line, while junior Michael Scarlett (CMC) had an all-around game with 15 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Connor Kim kept the Stags wary with his efficient scoring, making six out of seven shots for 16 points to lead the Pirates.
Leading 7-5 in the first half, the Stags went on a massive 16-3 run to assert their dominance over the Pirates. Senior Scott Lynds (CMC) did an excellent job facilitating the Stags' offense and creating openings for his teammates off dribble penetrations. The Stags played selflessly, moving the ball around and finding open teammates for the shot. Several substitutes, including freshmen Kele Mkpado (CMC) and Maxwell Kirsch (CMC), did an outstanding job in defending and making key buckets to help the Stags hold onto the lead. CMS was up 47-32 at the half.
The Stags refused to take their foot off the pedal and did their best to keep the game out of reach. Senior Riley Hall (CMC) utilized his size and length to contain the Pirates' offense on the perimeter and in the paint, while freshman Miles President (HMC) provided relentless energy on both sides of the floor. With less than 14 minutes left in the second half, President had an emphatic block on Chris Molina to keep the Stags ahead 67-38. Leading 73-42 with 11:17 left, the Stags went on a 10-2 run, during which Davis splashed two triples, to put the game away for good.
CMS will host San Diego Christian on Dec. 2 at 7 pm in hopes of maintaining their strong start before opening up conference play.
