GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Behind five players in double figures, Gwynedd Mercy downed visiting Baruch, 91-73, Saturday afternoon at The Griffin Complex in the 2016 Coaches vs Cancer Classic.
Rip Engel posted a game-high 22 points while Arron Goodman netted 21. Cedric Elleby scored 16 while Matt Sommers added 13 and Courtney Cubbage kicked in 11. After leading 40-29 at the half, the Griffins (3-0) shot 64% in the second half to stay unbeaten on the season.
Chimaechi Ekekeugbor scored 17 for the Bearcats (4-1), who suffered their first loss of the season.
Gwynedd would trail by as much as five in the first half but would close the stanza on an 18-3 run to take an 11-point edge into the lockerroom.
Two Doyin Issac free throws made it an eight-point game (55-47) with 12:31 left, but that's when GMercyU put their foot on the gas, via a quick 6-0 spurt to restore a double-digit lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
The Griffins finished at a 30-for-54 (55.6%) shooting clip and have a 35-25 rebound advantage on the day. Sommers was a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc totaling a career-high in points while Elleby and Larry Jones III each grabbed eight boards apiece. Elleby also blocked three shots and moved closer to the 1,000 point career mark. After today, the senior forward sits at 994 points. Goodman is not far behind with 974 career points.
Doyin totaled 12 points to the Bearcats while William Sixsmith hit three three's to finish with nine. As a team, Baruch shot 44.3% (27-of-61).
Gwynedd returns to action on Wednesday when they play at Cairn in CSAC action in a doubleheader with the women. The men tip it off at 8 p.m.
