Gettysburg falls to Wittenberg in tournament consolation game

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Wittenberg University outscored the Bullets 34-19 in the first half, then pulled away with a 16-4 run early in the second period to hand the Gettysburg College men's basketball team a 74-51 setback the consolation game of the 26th annual Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon in Bream Gym.

Senior forward Cody Kiefer led the Bullets (0-3) with 15 points and six rebounds. Senior center Tanner Kirkpatrick added 11 points and six boards and was named to the Gettysburg All-Tournament Team for the second time in his career; he was also selected during his freshman season.

Landon Hormann was one of four Tiger starters to score in double figures, netting 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting while grabbing nine rebounds. Ryan Gallimore added 14 points and was also named to the All-Tournament Team for Wittenberg, which shot 56.4 percent from the floor.

In the championship game, Delaware Valley University defeated Alvernia University 75-70 in overtime. Del Val's Tyliek Kimbrough scored 26 points and was named the tournament MVP while teammate Manny Brown added 23 points in 20 minutes off the bench. Brown was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Alvernia's Marquis Marshall and Mike Miller. Marshall scored 33 points in a losing effort.

Wittenberg never trailed after starting the game on a 12-3 run that spanned the opening 7:44. The Bullets cut the gap to seven (21-14) after a pair of free throws from freshman Danny Duffey with 7:28 left in the half, but the Tigers came right back with a 9-0 that pushed their lead to 16 with 3:50 to go. The visitors led by as much as 18 (34-16) before senior guard Pete Christ buried a 3-pointer with 49 ticks showing to make it a 15-point game at the break.

A triple from junior forward Cameron Stewart made it 36-22 with 18:44 remaining, but that's when the Tigers embarked on their decisive run that was launched by consecutive 3-pointers from Gallimore.

Wittenberg enjoyed its largest lead at 28 with 8:46 left before the Bullets found a spark, using a 13-2 spurt to make it 64-47 with 4:55 showing. But the Tigers secured their victory with a game-ending 10-4 run.
