The Baruch College Bearcats defeated the Mavericks of Medaille College, 66-64, to win the Western New York Knee and Orthopedic Surgery Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Buffalo, New York.
Chimaechi Ekekeugborled the 3-0 Bearcats with a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds, while William Sixsmithhad 16 points and Doyin Isaac13 points.
The visiting Bearcats controlled most of the action and led by as much as 48-37 early in the second half, but the hosts of the weekend tournament Medaille rallied with an 18-4 run that enabled them to briefly lead 55-52 with under 10 minutes remaining.
The Bearcats never lost their composure and Ekekeugbor scored nine of his 18 total points in the final nine minutes to earn Tournament MVP Honors. Sixsmith was named to the All-Tournament Team after scoring a key 16 points in the first half.
Allen Villarhad another solid game off the bench with nine points and seven rebounds.
The team will return home on Tuesday to play Old Westbury in a non-conference contest scheduled for 7 p.m. in the ARC Arena.
