Late surge carries Albion past Kenyon

ANGOLA, Ind. – Corey Wheeler hit a pair of free throws with one second remaining to lift Albion College to an 85-84 victory over Kenyon College on the second day of the St. Andrews Products Classic.

Wheeler, who finished with 26 points (the second-highest single-game output of his collegiate career) and a team-high six rebounds, also hit a pair of free throws with 55 seconds left.

Mitchell Rubio buried a 3-point shot in the final minute of the first half to boost Albion to a 48-39 halftime lead.

Alexander Powell and Matt Shifrin dialed up from 3-point range on Kenyon's first two possessions of the second half and the second half was a back and forth affair with the lead changing six times. Powell hit four free throws and Ethan Shapiro hit the second of two shots as the Lords surged to an 81-73 lead with 2 ½ minutes left.

Albion was efficient on its offensive possessions down the stretch as Arshawn Parker and Jaylin Fordham knocked down 3-point baskets and Fordham and Wheeler combined to make all six shots from the line.

Fordham led the starters with 14 points. Adam Davis contributed 13 points off the bench by hitting 5 of 6 shots from the field. Darius Branch chipped in with 10 points and two assists.

Albion will make its home debut at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against Heidelberg (Ohio) University.
