Matt D'Amico scored a career-high 26 points to lead Saint Vincent to an 84-73 victory over Lancaster Bible College in the consolation game of the Franklin & Marshall College Tournament in Lancaster.
D'Amico, who came off the bench early in the first half, was sharp throughout the night, hitting 10 of 14 shots from the floor and 5-6 at the free throw line. He also had a team-high five rebounds - including two key boards in the closing minutes - to lead the team. He also had five steals on the night.
Austin Dedert and Austin Ford combined for five quick points to open the game for the Bearcats, before the Chargers tallied six points to take a 6-5 lead. It would be their only lead of the half, however, as the Bearcats stormed back.
Dedert hit a floater to start the rally, followed by a Jason Capco three and a tip-in by Dedert that made the score 12-6.
Up 14-10 near the 14-minute mark, Tom Kromka drove through the lane for a score, then Matt D'Amico came off the bench and took control of the game. D'Amico drove to the hoop for his first score, then followed with a fadeaway jumper that made it a 20-11 game.
Later, D'Amico hit a three that ran the lead to twelve, 25-13, and added a follow up near the midway point of the half to put SVC in front 27-16.
After Lancaster cut the margin to eight (31-23), D'Amico scored again with 8:30 remaining in the half.
The Chargers then got hot, going on an 8-2 run to make the score 35-31 before Ford scored on a putback at the 6:45 mark. A Collin Neville score later increased the lead to seven, 41-34 with just under six minutes remaining.
The lead was back to nine after another D'Amico layup, 45-36, and the teams then traded baskets over the next couple of minutes. A Dedert hook shot with 1:35 left put SVC in front 51-42, but Lancaster closed the half with five straight points, and SVC went into the break up 51-47.
The Chargers started the second half strong, scoring six consecutive points to take the lead, 53-51, before Dedert tied the game on a second chance layup near the 17-minute mark.
The game remained close until the midway point of the second half, when D'Amico hit a jumper to put SVC in front by four, 64-60. Later, a Kromka turnaround jumper put the Bearcats ahead 67-62. That score was followed by a Dedert bucket and a steal and fast break score by Coy Patterson Jr that made the score 71-62.
However, Lancaster then hit back to back three pointers to cut the gap to just three, 71-68 with 4:18 on the clock.
Ford scored to increase the lead to four, 74-70 with 3:30 remaining, then D'Amico scored on a coast-to-coast drive after a rebound. Patterson then drove the baseline to make it a 78-73 game with just under two minutes remaining.
The SVC defense then took control, with Dedert coming up with a block and D'Amico picking up a pair of rebounds to help the Bearcats put the game away.
Behind D'Amico on the scoreboard was Dedert, who had a strong game with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Patterson tallied 14 and Ford had 10 points.
After the game, Kromka was named to the All-Tournament team.
With the win, SVC improves to 1-2 on the season. The team's home opener will be Monday night (November 20) against Penn State-Fayette at 7PM in the Carey Center.
