#14 Scots extend home win streak to 17 games

Alma, Mich – The Alma College men's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season on Tuesday (Nov. 15) night, coming from behind to defeat Ohio Northern University, 80-72, at Art Smith Arena. The Scots, ranked 14th in the country, have now won 17 straight home games. 

Senior Trevor Gernaat (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian/Mid-Michigan CC) led the team with 19 points, including 13 in the second half, while senior Chase Fairchild (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) netted 15, including three of his four three-point attempts. Senior Tyler Edwards(Flint, Mich./Swartz Creek) contributed 13 points and went 7-for-10 from the free throw line down the stretch. Freshman Luke Lamoreaux (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) also scored in double-figures, coming off the bench to net 13 points. 

"They (the seniors) made plays, they moved the ball, and Trevor (Gernaat) started to take over more," Head Coach Sam Hargraves said. "There's been some adversity we've gone through already, but it is their team." 

Down by 11 at the half, the Scots stormed back in the second half, tying the game at 59-59 with 6:45 to play. Alma took its first lead of the half with 6:19 left after a pair of free throws by Lamoreaux. The Scots would lead the rest of the way, and made 10 of their 12 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

The Scots will see action again at home in back-to-back games, first on Friday, Nov. 18, when they take on No. 18 Augustana College at 7:30 p.m. Alma will close out its season opening three-game homestand on Saturday, Nov. 19, against Finlandia University at 3 p.m.
