Cortland Edges Brockport, 80-78, to Advance to SUNYAC Title Game

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Cortland used torrid second-half shooting to erase a seven-point deficit at the break and defeat Brockport 80-78 in the semifinals of the 2016 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Basketball Championship on Friday at SUNY Plattsburgh.

The second-seeded Red Dragons (19-7) will face the fourth-seeded Oswego Saturday at 4 p.m. for the SUNYAC title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament. Oswego, the defending league champion, defeated host and top seed Plattsburgh, 81-74, in Friday's other semifinal. Cortland will be making its first appearance in the SUNYAC Championship game since 2013, when the Red Dragons captured the title.

Brockport, the third seed, finishes the season with a 17-10 record. The Golden Eagles suffered the loss despite shooting 60% (30-for-50) from the field overall (62 percent from 3-point range) and having an opportunity down the stretch to force overtime or earn the win.

Cortland shot 68.4 percent from the field (13-of-19) and 63.6 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-11) in the second half after shooting 45.8 percent and 25 percent, respectively, in the opening 20 minutes. The Red Dragons finished the game at 56 percent overall and 44 percent from the arc. Cortland also outscored Brockport on the foul line, 22-10, with the Red Dragons making 22 of their first 24 free throws before missing their last four attempts in the final two seconds. Brockport was 10-of-14 (71 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Red Dragons' outstanding shooting resulted in five players reaching double figures, led by Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) who topped all point-getters with 19. He was 4-for-9 from the field and went 9 for 9 at the line while playing all 40 minutes.

Shayne Martinez (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) added a career-high 16 points after going 6-of-7 from the floor overall and 4-for-5 from 3-point range, while Carrel Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Deer Park (NY)) and J.P. Reagan (Cortland) each dropped in 14. Reagan went 4-for-5 from the floor and was perfect at the line (6-for-6), and he led the Red Dragons with five rebounds. T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) posted 10 points to round out the double-figure scoring for the Red Dragons.

Brockport was led by Clifton Lyerly and Hamed Shamseldin, who tallied 18 points each. Shamseldin came off the bench to go 7-for-9 from the field and 3-for-4 from three-point land while also leading the Golden Eagles on the boards with five.

Olusola Adeniran posted 15 points for the Golden Eagles on 6-for-7 shooting from the field, and Devonn Gavin chipped in 11 points off the bench.

The opening seven minutes saw the lead swerve back and forth until Cortland snagged a 15-10 advantage at 12:48 on Reagan's three-pointer. Brockport stormed back, however, with a 14-3 run that culminated with a Gavin jumper and a 24-18 Golden Eagle lead at 8:52.

The Red Dragons clawed back to take a 27-26 lead at with 5:58 remaining in the opening period after Reagan connected on a pair of free throws, but Brockport used a 13-5 run to close out the half to snag a 39-32 lead.

Cortland fell behind 40-32 after Pat Modzelewski hit a pair of Brockport free throws at 19:08, but the Red Dragons began nipping away at the Golden Eagle lead until they forged a 45-45 tie at 16:02 on Shayne Martinez's three-pointer.

Cortland then began to surge ahead, building a 58-50 advantage with 12:14 left in regulation on another Martinez three.

Brockport whittled the lead to four on several occasions and knotted the game 75-75 at 1:58 when Clifton Lyerly hit a layup, was fouled and converted the free throw. Cortland jumped up 78-75 on Joseph's three-pointer off a baseline inbounds pass with 50 seconds left in regulation, but Brockport tied it again at 78-78 when Shamseldin hit a layup and was fouled, making the free throw.

Cortland took possession with 39 seconds left and Estarfaa was fouled with 12 seconds remaining. He connected on both free throw to put the Red Dragons ahead. Shamseldin drove the lane looking for the potential tying bucket but lost the ball in traffic with just under two seconds left. After Cortland missed two free throws, Brockport attempted a long inbounds pass from under the Cortland basketball but the ball hit the ceiling to turn the ball back over to the Red Dragons. Cortland again missed two free throws with two tenths of a second left, but Reagan grabbed the rebound and time expired.
