BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Devin Thompson topped all scorers with 22 points to help the University of New England men's basketball team record an 81-71 victory over Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 20) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor'easters (13-12) finish the regular-season at 8-10 in conference play, good for the seventh seed in the upcoming CCC Championship and a visit to second-seeded Wentworth Institute of Technology (13-5 CCC) in Tuesday's quarterfinal round.
With the loss, the Seahawks conclude the 2015-16 campaign at 9-16 overall and 6-12 in the CCC.
After being honored as the lone senior for Big Blue, Thompson got off to a fast start, knocking down four treys in the opening 12 minutes to account for 14 of the team's initial 26 points. UNE trailed 17-15 just before the midway mark of the 1st half, but a triple from Blake Swanson and eight by Thompson formed an 11-1 run in 2:06 that vaulted the hosts in front for good (26-18).
The 35-30 halftime spread surged to 14 (46-32) just over three minutes into the 2nd frame, fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from CJ Autry out of the break.
However, Salve Regina chipped away at the deficit and cut it to just four (68-64) with 4:04 remaining. The Nor'easters got things moving in the right direction on a layup by Matt Lettick with 2:38 on the clock, and the hosts made 11 of their next 12 free throws to seal it.
UNE shot 14-of-24 (58%) from the field in the 2nd half to finish the day at 52 percent accuracy. Both sides made 28 baskets in the contest, with the Nor'easters posting a seven-point advantage (12-5) over SRU from three-point land.
Thompson drained six from downtown while also grabbing five rebounds. Autry canned 4-of-5 from deep on the way to 18 points, and pulled down a team-high eight boards. Lettick and Swanson ended with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Drew Coveney packed the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds, and six assists.
For the visitors, Barrett Hanlon posted a double-double with 21 points and a game-high 11 rebounds (6 offensive). SRU got 15 points from behind the arc out of Rodney Morton, while Nicholas Bates tallied 12 and Bryce Boggs added 10.
