LOS ANGELES — Andrew Johnson scored 21 points on 10 of 15 shooting, upping his career total to 1,037 points, Jay Miller came up with the big shot at the end, and the Occidental men's basketball team beat Whittier for the second time this season, 81-80 at Rush Gymnasium on Saturday.
Miller, the reigning SCIAC Male Student-Athlete of the Week, made an and-one jumper from the right baseline with 4 seconds left in the game to tie it at 80 and then followed it up with the game-winning free throw.
Whittier's attempt at the buzzer to equalize was well off the mark.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 12-12 overall and 6-9 in SCIAC play.
Whittier falls to 14-10 and 9-6.
Miller, the SCIAC's leading scorer at 20.5 points per game, scored 13 points and had six rebounds.
Johnson keeps blossoming into one of the SCIAC's best players. The junior is fifth in scoring (18.5 ppg), sixth in rebounding (8.1 rpg) and fourth in field goal percentage (47.9 percent).
From the Coach: "AJ just keeps maturing and getting better," Oxy head coach Brian Newhall said. "We couldn't be happier for a better person to achieve this 1,000-point milestone. He's a feared player in the conference and we're happy we have him coming back for another year."
Oxy first year Jeevin Sandhu scored a career-high 17 points on 7 of 8 shooting, including 2 of 2 from beyond the 3-point line.
Kory Hamane added 13 points and six rebounds for the Tigers. Andrew Garrison scored eight points and had eight rebounds.
Eric Jennings led Whittier with 23 points, Anthony Martinez had 18 and Andrew Torres scored 15 and grabbed nine rebounds.
