RADNOR, Pa. – Sophomore guard Ethan Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) put on one of the most impressive shooting performances in University of Scranton men's basketball history on Monday night.
Danzig canned a school-record nine 3-pointers en route to a career-high 31 points to lead The University of Scranton men's basketball team to its eighth straight victory, a 94-73 rout of Cabrini in the Dixon Center. Danzig finished the night 11-for-17 from the field, including 9-for-14 from 3-point range.
His nine 3-pointers eclipsed the previous mark of eight, shared by Al Celljas (vs. Widener, Feb. 26, 2000) and Ryan Rogan (vs. Springfield, Nov. 17, 2001). Danzig's 14 attempts also set a Scranton record, surpassing the previous mark of 13, shared by Callejas (same game), Mike Jones (vs. Wilkes, Feb. 12, 1992) and Zach Ashworth (at Catholic, Jan. 21, 2011).
Danzig made five first-half 3-pointers as the Royals took a 45-41 lead into halftime. He made four more in the second half as the Royals pulled away for their eighth straight victory, the team's longest winning streak since a 14-game streak late in the 2013-14 season.
Scranton (19-5) also got 29 points and nine rebounds from senior forward Brendan Boken (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola). He now has 1,839 career points, still third-most in school history and just 20 behind Irv Johnson (1975-78, 1979-80) for second and 64 behind Gene Mumford (1968-71) for the record. The Royals have at least two games remaining.
The Royals used a 20-6 run late in the second half to put the game away. They finished the night shooting a sizzling 60 percent (39-for-65) from the field, including 14-for-23 (60.9 percent) from 3-point range. Scranton also won the rebounding battle, 39-30, including holding Cabrini, one of the top offensive rebounding teams in the country, to just 12.
Sophomore guard Kevin Doolan (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) added nine points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals in the win. Junior forward John Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) added eight points and nine rebounds, and went 4-for-4 from the field, increasing his NCAA Division III-leading field goal percentage to 67.4.
Cabrini (14-9) shot just 38.5 percent (25-for-65) from the field. The Cavaliers made nine of 21 from beyond the arc and committed 15 turnovers. Sophomore forward Tyheim Monroe (Philadelphia, Pa./Olney Charter) had 14 points and 13 rebounds, his NCAA Division III-leading 23rd double-double of the season.
Scranton will wrap up regular season play on Saturday, Feb. 20, when the Royals travel to Washington, D.C. for a Landmark Conference showdown with Catholic at 2 p.m. A win would give the Royals a chance to be the top seed in next week's conference playoffs.
