POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (16-7, 10-6 SUNYAC) spoiled Senior Day for the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-21, 1-14) with an 87-71 victory at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Seniors Joe Estramonte (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich) and Mitch Lamerson (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) led the Bears with 24 and 14 points, while freshmen Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Charter) and Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) contributed 15 and 13.
The Bears and Red Dragons traded buckets over the first nine minutes of the contest. At the 15:18 mark, Cortland sophomore forward Carrel Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Deer Park) dunked to give the Red Dragons a 9-7 lead. Two minutes later, Kane answered with a jam of his own to put Potsdam up 12-11. After five straight from Cortland to make it 16-12 at 13:03, Estramonte and Onabor countered with two 3-pointers to give the Bears their last lead of the contest at 18-16. The Red Dragons countered with a 10-0 run to grab the lead for good. As Cortland appeared to be pulling away, Estramonte drained two more threes to make it a 33-27 contest with 5:12 on the clock. The Red Dragons closed the half with a 12-5 stretch and took a 45-32 advantage into the locker room.
Cortland steadily built its lead over the second half despite a strong effort from long range for the Bears. Senior guard Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo, N.Y./Maryvale) hit a jumper to give Cortland its biggest lead of the contest at 83-59. Estramonte led Potsdam to a 12-4 finish with eight points in the final 2:45.
Estarfaa led the Red Dragons with 17 points. Seniors T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn, N.Y./Friends Academy) and J.P. Reagan (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) each scored 14 points and Joseph and junior guard Michael Kelly (Monroe, N.Y./Burke Catholic) added 11 apiece.
