LOS ANGELES — Andrew Johnson scored 23 points, Spencer Levy had 20 off the bench and Jay Miller added all 15 of his in the second half as the Occidental men's basketball team overcame a nine-point deficit late in the game, winning at La Verne 74-70 on Saturday.
Levy carried the Tigers early as they struggled to stop La Verne's outside shooting, scoring 17 points in the first half to keep Oxy even at halftime. He finished the game 7 of 9 from the field and 3 of 4 from behind the 3-point line.
After falling behind 56-47 with 8:21 to play in the second half, Johnson and Miller took over, leading the Tigers on a 20-2 run that lasted until the there was just more than 2 minutes to play. By that point the Tigers had extended a nine-point lead of their own.
Miller scored nine points during the run, including tough shots late in the shot clock.
Johnson had a couple of big baskets including an and-1 that finally gave Oxy the lead with 4 minutes to go. He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and had a pair of steals.
Kory Hamane and Austin Dewitz iced the game with a couple of free throws to preserve the two-possession lead in the final 90 seconds.
Dewitz had six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
La Verne went 7 of 14 from the three point line in the first half, compared to just 3 of 12 in the second.
Season Impact: The Tigers are still alive, moving to 11-11 overall and 5-8 in SCIAC play.
La Verne falls to 9-13 and 7-6.
