RICHMOND, Ind. – Freshman Isaiah Waire scored a career-high 26 points, but Anderson University's Stanley Duncan led all scorers with 32 points as the Ravens defeated the Earlham College men's basketball team 86-77 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Saturday.
Earlham kept the HCAC's top offensive team to just 29 points at halftime. The Quakers trailed by four points with time winding down in the first 20 minutes of play, but senior Taylen Alexander put back a missed layup from freshman Nick Sands as the buzzer sounded to get Earlham within a single basket.
The Quakers trailed by six (37-31) early in the second half, but got back to within a single point when freshman Chainey Zolman hit a three-pointer off of a pass from Alexander.
Anderson then hit fire, however, as Duncan hit three consecutive triples in transition to go ahead 61-44 with 7:38 to play.
Despite trailing by 17, Earlham did not quit. A Waire three-pointer with three and a half minutes to play got the Quakers within five points (70-65). Earlham's press forced 16 Raven turnovers in total, but the Quakers could not get closer than five points as Anderson hit free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Alexander and Sands added 20 and 13 points respectively to go along with Waire's 26 points. Three other Ravens, Trevor Lucas, Cole Hartman, and Brett Anderson, finished in double figures along with Duncan.
Anderson shot 61.7 percent (29-47) from the field including 8-17 from three-point range. The Quakers finished 25-56 for 44.6 percent from the field.
Earlham did achieve a rare feat as the Quakers were perfect from the free throw line, nailing all 24 attempts. The Ravens went a respectable 20-27 from the charity stripe.
The Quakers return to action on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Rose-Hulman.
