NEWARK, N.J. (February 6, 2016) - Senior forward David Azoroh of the Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team scored his 1,000th career point early in the first half of a 74-58 rout of William Paterson University Saturday night in The Golden Dome Arena.

With the win, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 11-4 in the conference and 16-6 overall. William Paterson drops to 10-12 overall and 5-10 in the conference.

Azoroh was unstoppable in the first half, scoring on his first two attempts, and after missing a jumper, a solid low-post move created enough space for him to drop in his fifth and sixth points of the night to give him 1,000 for his career. Azoroh joins 17 other Scarlet Raiders in the 1,000-point club, including two of his teammates - senior forward Jordan McDaniel and senior guard John Snow - who were honored prior to the game with commemorative 1,000 point balls. Azoroh - who will get his ball in one week - finished with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting and six rebounds, pouring in a team-best 15 before intermission.

The rout was on from the start in this one as the Scarlet Raiders led from wire-to-wire for a second-straight game after defeating Kean University by 30 points (85-55) Wednesday night. Just 3:03 into the action, Rutgers-Newark had a 9-0 lead behind a three-pointer from senior guard Vik Singh, two buckets from Azoroh and a bucket from Snow.

A three-pointer from sophomore guard Tyler Ofray helped the Scarlet Raiders to their first double-digit lead of the night with 9:59 left in the first, before a 9-0 run from the hosts to end the period made it 40-21 at the break. In addition to Azoroh's 15, Snow poured in 14 first-half points.

Three points the old fashioned way for McDaniel pushed the lead into the 20's 1:30 into the second half, and two at the line from Snow made it 52-27 with 15:02 left.

Snow and McDaniel connected on back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead to 29 (60-31) at the 12:34 mark, with a Snow layup accounting for a 62-31 margin that was R-N's largest lead of the night.

From that point, Paterson was able to get closer, but the final outcome was never in doubt as the Scarlet Raiders maintained their hold on third place in the conference standings, one game behind New Jersey City University and Stockton University who are both 12-3.

Snow poured in a game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting, adding three rebounds and three assists, and Azoroh had the previously mentioned 18 and six. McDaniel had 15 points (all in the second half) and nine rebounds, while Ofray had six points, a team-high 10 rebounds and a team-high four assists. Singh finished with six points and four boards.

The Scarlet Raiders shot an even 50 percent (27-for-54) from the field, 33.3 percent (6-for-18) from three and 58.3 percent (14-for-24) at the line. They were plus six (37-31) on the glass and had 11 assists to go with just nine turnovers.

Paterson shot 38.2 percent from the floor (21-for-55), 28 percent from three (7-for-25) and 56.3 percent at the stripe (9-for-16). The Pioneers were led by 18 points from senior guard Bright Mensah and 17 points and 13 rebounds from senior forward Terik Bridgeman.

Rutgers-Newark will return to the hardwood Wednesday night at Rutgers University-Camden in a key NJAC showdown. The Scarlet Raiders have clinched a top-four spot in the conference with the hopes of moving up into first or second to get a first round bye in the conference tournament.

On Sunday, Head Men's Basketball Coach Joe Loughran will go on the Hoopsville show on www.D3Hoops.com - his spot is scheduled to air at 1:20 p.m.
