Thunder Drop Road Contest at Adrian

ADRIAN, Mich.-- Adrian's hot shooting proved too much for the Trine men's basketball team to overcome as the Bulldogs dealt the Thunder a 79-68 loss in MIAA-action Saturday afternoon.

Adrian shot 54 percent from the field (27-of-50), including an 8-of-16 (50 percent) mark from three-point range. Christian Covile scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting to pace the Bulldogs. Covile added 13 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season. Jared Holmquist (Reed City, Mich./Reed City) led Trine with his MIAA-leading ninth double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The Thunder fell to 15-6 overall, 5-5 in conference play. Adrian improved to 12-9 overall and moved into a tie for fourth in the league standings with Trine with a 5-5 conference mark.

Holmquist moved into third on Trine's all-time list in rebounds with 709 in his career. He is one of three players in team history with more than 700 career rebounds.

Travon Johnson contributed 14 points on a perfect shooting night for the Bulldogs. Anthony Cannon chipped in with 12 points off the bench, while Rickey Jackson, Jr. added 11 points. Adrian held a 28-12 scoring edge in the paint.

Will Dixon (Indianapolis, Ind./Zionsville) scored 15 points for the Thunder. Freshman Jordan Kreglow (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg) came off the bench to add a career-high 11 points 4-of-5 shooting. He made all three of his three-point attempts. Trine shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field and knocked down 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from three-point range.

A 14-4 run over a span of 4:21 gave Adrian its first double-digit lead of the night in the first half. Jackson, Jr. and Covile combined for 12 of those points as the Bulldogs took a 33-20 lead with 4:34 to play in the first half.

The Thunder were able to pull within 38-33 at the half behind threes by Kreglow and Tarvis Malone (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) and a bucket by Holmquist. Trine would get as close as 44-42 when Dixon knocked down a three with 16:34 to play, but the Thunder could not pull ahead.

The Bulldogs responded with a 17-5 surge over the next six minutes to open up a 14-point lead. Covile accounted for 14 of those points, including a span in which he went on a personal 10-0 run. Trine was unable to get the deficit to single digits the rest of the game.

The Thunder host Hope this Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Hershey Hall. The Flying Dutchmen are ranked seventh in the nation.
