CORTLAND, N.Y. – JP Reagan (Cortland) hit two free throws with 4.4 seconds left as Cortland nipped visiting Buffalo State, 63-62, in SUNYAC men's basketball action.

Cortland currently sits in a three-way tie for third place in the SUNYAC, along with Brockport and Oneonta, with a 7-5 league mark (13-6 overall). Buffalo State (12-8) dropped to seventh in the league standings at 6-7.

Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) led the Red Dragons with 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Reagan finished with 13 points and four rebounds and T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) added 11 points. Carrel Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Deer Park (NY)) led Cortland's defensive effort with nine rebounds and three blocks.

Lovell Smith paced Buffalo State with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Nico McLean finished with 11 points, seven rebound and three steals, and Mike Henry had 10 points and nine rebounds.

In a game that featured 12 ties and 10 lead changes, Cortland grabbed the largest lead of the night for either team at 51-44 with 9:37 left after an Estarfaa 3-pointer. The lead was still seven at 53-46 on a Reagan layup with eight minutes remaining.

Buffalo State worked its way back into the game and eventually took a 62-61 lead on a Smith jumper with 1:28 left. Cortland missed a layup with 1:01 remaining, but forced the Bengals into missing a 3-pointer with 34 seconds left. Henry, however, pulled down an offensive rebound and Cortland had to foul with 26 seconds left as the game clock and shot clock were basically even.

Buffalo State missed both free throws. Hefele won the battle for the rebound, and Cortland called timeout with 17 seconds left after moving the ball into the frontcourt. After the Bengals also called timeout, Cortland ran a play that resulted in Reagan getting the ball on the right wing. He beat a defender, drove to the basket and was fouled while almost making the shot. He hit both free throws to give Cortland a 63-62 lead.

Both teams called timeout again, and the Bengals inbounded the ball to Ryniek Holloway in the backcourt. He raced upcourt but had to take a tough running jumper from just inside the 3-point arc that missed the mark as the buzzer sounded.

Reagan was the hero for Cortland versus Buffalo State for the second time this season. His 3-pointer with one second left in overtime gave the Red Dragons an 84-83 overtime win in Buffalo in early December.

Cortland will host Fredonia on Saturday at 4 p.m.
