FARMINGTON, Maine -- The Bates men's basketball team defeated the University of Maine-Farmington by a score of 91-71 Tuesday night behind 19 made three-pointers.
The 19 made threes ties the program record for three-pointers made in one game. Bates (10-10) also made 19 threes in a game during the 1990-1991 season against Thomas. They made the 19 threes Tuesday on 42 attempts, which breaks the previous program record of 40 attempts in one game, also set against Thomas.
Mike Boornazian '16 (Portland, Conn.) led the way with a game-high 20 points on 7-15 shooting. He made a game-high five three-pointers on 11 attempts. Josh Britten '16 (Yarmouth, Maine) joined Boornazian in the three-point shooting display, hitting 4-11 shots from deep. Shawn Strickland '18 (Middletown, Conn.), Jerome Darling '17 (Hartford, Conn.) and Justin Zukowski '18 (Portland, Maine) each made three threes on the evening. Quin Leary '17 (Auburn, Maine) made the only three he attempted in the game. His made three was the 19th and final three-pointer of the night.
Britten finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. Strickland contributed 11 points, four rebounds and a game-high five assists. Meanwhile Boornazian grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and contributed three assists. Malcolm Delpeche '17 (Wilmington, Del.) didn't attempt a three but he still finished in double figures with 11 points on 4-6 shooting, six rebounds and two assists.
Tuesday's game was a very quickly played contest. Bates only got to the free throw line 10 times and the Bobcats committed a season-low 10 fouls.
The Bobcats briefly trailed 14-13 in the first half. But Boornazian hit back-to-back threes to give them the lead for good. UMF (2-16) didn't go away for a bit. They cut the lead to 34-33 with 5:47 to go in the first half on a Sean Murphy three-pointer.
Boornazian answered again with a three and after Eric Berry made a layup, Strickland drained a triple to extend the lead to 40-35.
Bates led 45-39 at the break.
Boornazian opened the second half scoring with a three and UMF never got to within closer than seven points the rest of the night.
Leary hit the single-game program record-tying 19th three with 42 seconds remaining in the contest. It was the last basket scored in the contest.
The Bobcats shot 45.2% from three in the game and 48.5% overall from the field.
Bates returns home Friday night to host Amherst at Alumni Gym. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
