JOHNSON, Vt. – The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team (2-15, 2-9) came up short on Saturday afternoon at Johnson State College (6-13, 6-6) as the Badgers hit a buzzer-beating layup in a 66-64 North Atlantic Conference loss.
Eric Berry (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) reached a new career-high with 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Berry made all four trips to the charity stripe and recorded five rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Nick Hilton (Wilton, Maine/Mt. Blue) charted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Hilton shot 9-of-18 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the line. Sean Murphy (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) added seven points for the Beavers off the bench.
Johnson's Asim Khan scored a team-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting with three makes from beyond the arc. Khan was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line and also came down with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Benjamin Hall tallied double figures with 11 points, five assists, and four rebounds.
In the final four minutes of the contest, the Beavers held a lead for most of the way, but could not generate any breathing room beyond a four-point advantage.
With two minutes to go, Khan made a layup to bring the Badgers within a bucket from tying the game. On UMF's next trip down the floor, Berry answered with a jumper of his own, but Khan hit another layup for the Badgers and closed the gap to 64-62.
The Beavers still held the two-point lead in the closing seconds until Johnson's Rasul Jackson tied the game with 13 seconds after converting a layup in the paint. Johnson's defense forced a UMF turnover and launched a pass up the court to Demetrius Slade, who beat the final buzzer with a layup for the game-winning score.
