BUENA VISTA, Va.- Christopher Newport improved to 16-1 overall and 10-0 atop the Capital Athletic Conference Wednesday night with an 82-73 victory at Southern Virginia University. The Captains, ranked ninth in the country, won their seventh-straight game and maintained a three-game lead in the CAC standings.

CNU was led by 14 points from senior Hunter Wetherell, who was one of five Captains in double figures. The game was marred by 53 personal fouls called and four technical fouls resulting in a total of 72 free throws attempted.

"There's not much to say after a game like that," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "We made enough of our foul shots down the stretch to win. We had three objectives in this game, and we accomplished all three, so we'll take it and move on."

The Captains trailed early, 2-0, and then jumped ahead and never trailed again. CNU built a nine-point lead at halftime, 36-27, and led by as many as 22 in the second half. SVU, now 6-11 overall and 5-5 in CAC play, used a 13-0 second-half run to cut the lead late as close as seven, 76-69. The Captains then sealed the triumph with free throws in the final minutes to beat the Knights for the second time this season.

Junior Tim Daly finished with 13 points, junior Rayshard Brown posted 12, and sophomores Marcus Carter and Aaron McFarland added ten each.

The Captains return to the Freeman Center for a CAC battle Saturday. CNU will host Penn State-Harrisburg with tipoff set for 4:00 p.m. Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will take place at halftime, as former CNU men's basketball standouts Jo Jo Chambers and Terry Gray enter the Hall of Fame.
