ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Jared Seltzer produced a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Sam Borst-Smith chipped in 15 points, six assists, four assists and four steals to pace the University of Rochester to a 66-63 victory over Carnegie Mellon University at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Sunday afternoon.
It was Rochester's third win in the last four games. The Yellowjackets are 10-6 overall, 3-2 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester is tied for third place in the UAA standings with NYU.
Carnegie Mellon is 7-9 overall, 0-5 in the UAA. The Tartans have lost six straight after a 7-3 start.
Ryan Maha scored 19 points for CMU to lead three men in double figures. Chris Shkil had 18 points and nine rebounds. Jack Serbin scored 14 points, had 13 rebounds, five assists, and two blocked shots.
A layup by Michael Mangan gave Rochester a 59-50 lead with 7:34 to play. Shkil and Maha led a furious rally. Shkil sank two layup and made two free throws in a span of 74 seconds to pull CMU within 59-56 with 6:05 left.
Seltzer sank his third three-pointer of the game, then added another jumpshot and Borst-Smith followed with one to stretch Rochester's edge to 66-57 with less than four minutes left. Maha hit a trey from the left of the key with 2:45 to go, then made one from the right side with 46.6 seconds remaining. That cut the deficit to 66-63.
Borst-Smith missed a jumper for Rochester with 21 seconds left. Carnegie rushed the ball upcourt. Maha misfired on a three-pointer with less than 11 seconds to go. In the scramble for the rebound, Rochester's Jacob Wittig dove at it. CMU's Jason Sebak grabbed it just before the buzzer but his attempt at the game-tying shot was short at the buzzer.
