Men’s Basketball Suffers First SUNYAC Defeat of ’15-’16

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. Double-doubles by seniors Kyle Richardson and Xavier Thomas were not enough for the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon against The College at Brockport, as the Cardinals were handed their first conference loss of the season, 74-63.

 
The setback also end Plattsburgh State's win streak at eight games and was its first home defeat in 2015-16. The Cardinals slip to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Golden Eagles improve to 10-6 overall and go back over .500 in the SUNYAC at 5-4.
 
Thomas collected his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native also posted three steals and two assists. Richardson only shot 4-of-14 from the field but got to the free throw line often, making 8-of-11 attempts. On the afternoon the product of Baldwin, N.Y., registered 16 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Brockport jumped out in front early with a 12-0 run beginning just over three minutes into the contest when the score was knotted at 5-5.
 
Freshman Jonathan Patron got the Cardinals back into the game by scoring eight points in a span of 3:54, cutting the deficit to five with 7:58 left in the opening stanza.
 
Plattsburgh State remained within striking distance over the next few minutes of play, but the Golden Eagles stretched their lead back to double digits with two and a half minutes showing on the board, thanks to a Clifton Lyerly three-pointer. Brockport sank 4-of-9 triple attempts in the first and 10-of-23 (43.5-percent) for the game.
 
After trailing by 10 points at halftime, the Cardinals put together their best stretch of play to start the second half. Plattsburgh State limited Brockport to just three points over the first four minutes and tied the game up at 41 apiece. The Golden Eagles regained their touch from downtown immediately, however, as long range hits from Lyerly and Patrick Modzelewski put Brockport back up by six.
 
Thomas and Richardson helped give Plattsburgh State its first lead since early in the game after combining for all ten points of a 10-0 Cardinal run, giving the home team a 53-49 lead.
 
The Cardinals' offense though went cold down the stretch while the Golden Eagles continued to make open shots. A pair of threes from Lyerly and junior guard Matthew Smith upped Brockport's lead to seven points with just over five minutes remaining.
 
Smith put the game away with a layup with a minute and forty seconds remaining, giving the Golden Eagles an 11-point advantage.
 
Plattsburgh State struggled shooting all afternoon, particularly from beyond the arc, as it made only 3-of-16 attempts. Overall the team shot just 34.4-percent (21-of-61) from the field.
 
Brockport shot an even 40-percent (26-of-65) for the game and went 12-of-13 from the free throw line. Sophomore Devonn Gavin paced the visitors with a game-high 19 points, while Lyerly and Smith added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
 
The Cardinals will hit the Memorial Hall court again tomorrow afternoon as they welcome in SUNY Geneseo. Tip-off for the highly anticipated matchup is scheduled for 3 p.m.
