BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Austin Coene went 9-of-15 from the field and totaled 26 points to pace Roger Williams University in a 76-70 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win over the University of New England in men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 16) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Hawks improve to 7-8 on the year, 5-3 in league games with their third straight triumph. The Nor'easters (9-6) slip back to 4-4 in conference outings.
After Coene, who dropped in 17 of his points following intermission, two others for RWU reached double figures (11) in Nick Marini and Josh McCourt. Marini also corralled a game-best eight rebounds and a match-high six assists.
Roger Williams led for the entirety of the 2nd half by converting 57 percent from the floor (13 of 23) and knocking down 5-of-8 from behind the arc. The Hawks finished the contest at 50 percent shooting accuracy.
UNE, which shot 38 percent, was paced by Devin Thompson with 14 points. Off the bench, Matt Lettick and Gavin Dibbleeach tossed in 13, and CJ Autry totaled 10.
The 1st half featured six lead-changes and five ties, though the Nor'easters could only manage one-point cushions each time they moved in front. RWU was up by as many as six (23-17) and tallied the final six points of the period to secure a 35-30 advantage.
Autry opened the 2nd with a trey, but the Hawks responded with a 9-1 run to push ahead by 10 (44-34). Coene had seven in the stretch.
Big Blue was back within six (54-48) at the midway mark, only to see Coene register six in an 11-3 spurt the extended the gap to 14 (65-51).
The hosts sliced the deficit down to six (1:39 left) and five (0:25 to go), but could not get any closer.
UNE heads for Endicott College (6-2 CCC) on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
