Franklin Loses Double Overtime Thriller to Anderson

Franklin, Ind. - Junior Aaron Mann (Indianapolis, Ind./Howe) rimmed out a potential game-tying 3-point attempt in the closing seconds as the Franklin College men's basketball lost a hard-fought 97-94 double-overtime contest to Anderson University in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Saturday from the Spurlock Center.

Junior Trey Boles (Carrollton, Ky./Carroll County) made two free throws with nine seconds left in regulation to square the contest at 79-79. Anderson was unsuccessful in getting a shot off during the closing moments of regulation.

In the first overtime period, senior Trae Washington (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) missed a potential game-winning 3-point field goal attempt just before the buzzer. Both teams managed seven points during the five-minute session.

Franklin took an 88-86 lead on a layup by freshman Blake Oakley (Kokomo, Ind./Northwestern) with 3:45 left in the second overtime period. Anderson's Stanley Duncan connected on a three-point field goal to give the visitors an 89-88 advantage at the 2:42 mark.

Later, a jumper by Mann squared the contest at 90-90 with 2:01 remaining. Anderson took a 93-91 lead with 16 seconds left after Anderson's Trevor Lucas split two free throws. However, Franklin two missed free throws on the following possession. Lucas made two additional free throws to give Anderson a 95-91 lead with seven seconds left. Oakley drained a three-point field goal to trim the deficit to one point with two seconds left.

Anderson's Cole Hartman made two free throws to extend the margin to three points, 97-94, with just over one second remaining. Then, Mann rimmed out a three pointer after freshman James Polston (Fairland, Ind./Triton Central) threw a pass to Boles past midcourt. Boles quickly passed to Mann in the right wing.

Mann scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. He made 19 of 20 free throw attempts in the contest. Washington scored 18 points, while senior Matt Niehoff (Rushville, Ind./Rushville) and Boles each added 13 points. Oakley scored nine points to round out the offensive attack.
