Great Shooting Propels Randolph to Road Victory over Yellow Jackets

ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph College men's basketball team shot 53.1% for the game on the way to defeating Randolph-Macon College 62-59 on Saturday.  The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win helped the WildCats stop a four-game skid.

Neither team could get on the board until the 18:12 mark when Lamont Moore hit a jumper for the Yellow Jackets.  However, Jason Eddie responded right away to tie the score.  The teams then exchanged baskets before the WildCats went on a 6-0 run.  Zach Desgain had four points and Andy Toe finished a layup during the streak.

Moore added a layup of his own to stop the run, but Ryan Fields came back with a traditional three-point play giving the 'Cats a 13-6 lead with 13:08 remaining.  The two sides then traded small runs.  R-MC scored five straight, and it was answered by three's by Seth Wimbish and Corey Brown.  Following an exchange of points, Randolph-Macon cut the deficit to two with 8:36 left in the half.  Toe stopped the run, and it would lead to another exchange.

With 1:11 left, Mike Silverthorn hit two from the charity stripe to bring the Yellow Jackets within three.  But Fields ended the half with two baskets to give Randolph the 39-32 lead at the intermission.

Randolph-Macon started the second stanza off very strong.  The Yellow Jackets scored the opening 10 points taking a three-point lead following a three from Moore.  The 'Cats came right back as Fields hit a layup, before Desgain added two of his own.

After two minutes of scoreless action, R-MC came back with six in a row to retake the lead.  Brown then converted a layup after stealing the ball from Daniel Noe.  The teams would then go two points for two points for a long stretch.  After that action, there was another lull in scoring before Desgain scored.  Freund extended the lead to five off a pass from Eddie with just over four minutes left, but Moore answered once more for the Yellow Jackets.

Eddie then knocked down a three, but R-MC scored six in a row cutting the Randolph advantage to one with 2:30 remaining.  Both teams then dried up on the offensive ends, as the defenses picked up.  Neither team scored, until the Yellow Jackets were forced to foul.  Desgain then went to the line and sealed the victory with two free throws.

Desgain finished the game with 14 points, while Fields also added double-digit (11).  Brown scored eight points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.  Moore led R-MC (6-7 overall, 2-2 ODAC) with a game-high 20 points.

Randolph (8-5, 2-2) will finish its short two-game road swing on Wednesday.  The WildCats will play the second game of a men and women's double-header across town at Lynchburg College (8-4, 1-2).  The men will play at 7:30 p.m. with the women's game beginning at 5 p.m.
