Men's basketball rallies late to top Ithaca

ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's basketball team rallied past visiting Ithaca College for an 84-81 Empire 8 Conference victory  Saturday afternoon in the Galanis Family Arena.

Junior guard Tyler Seelman (Lorton, VA/Hayfield Academy) scored 34 points on 12-of-21 to lead a Saxons team that made 56 percent of its field goal attempts. Freshman point guard Pat McLamore (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points on six-of-10 shooting.

Seelman made all six of his three-point attempts in the first half and scored 24 points as AU trailed the Bombers, 43-39, at intermission. For the game, he connected on eight of 11 shots from long range.

With the win, AU improves to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in E8 play; the Bombers drop to 8-4 (2-2 Empire 8).

AU trailed by five points (77-72) after Ithaca's Marc Chasin connected on a three-pointer with 5:41 left in the game and again at 79-74 after two Chasin free throws with 4:26 left. Alfred scored six unanswered points over the next 1:13 to take an 80-79 lead, then closed the game on a 4-2 run, with Ithaca's final points of the game coming on a jumper as time expired.

AU junior guard Eric Adams (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) scored 13 points with three rebounds, two assists and two steals, while sophomore forward Dalton Cousin (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) had six points, four rebounds and five assists.

Carroll Rich scored a team-high 20 points for Ithaca, and Peter Ezema had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m. at St. John Fisher.
