WAYNE, N.J. (January 9, 2016) – Senior forward Jordan McDaniel scored a career-high 32 points on 10-for-16 shooting to lead the Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team to a 78-65 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road win at William Paterson University Saturday in Wayne.

With the win, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 5-2 in the NJAC and 10-4 overall. William Paterson drops to 2-5 in the conference and 7-6 overall.

Rutgers-Newark will look to make it three-straight conference wins Wednesday night at 8 p.m. when the Scarlet Raiders welcome NJAC foe Ramapo College to The Golden Dome Arena.

McDaniel eclipsed his previous career-high of 31 set back on December 9 in a conference victory over Kean University in Newark. He now has poured in double-digit points in every game but one this season and has 20 or more in eight games. The Scarlet Raider veteran was 3-for-6 from three-point land and 9-for-12 at the line, adding nine rebounds and three blocks to his line.

Senior forward David Azoroh and senior guard John Snow each recorded double-doubles. Azoroh finished with 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting and 11 rebounds, while Snow had 13 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Tyler Ofray added eight points, five boards, two assists and two steals, and senior guard Ricky Stephens had eight rebounds.

Rutgers-Newark shot 50 percent (21-for-42) from the floor, 41.7 percent (5-for-12) from three and 31-for-45 from the line. It is the fourth time this season the Scarlet Raiders shot 50 percent or better from the field and the 31 made free throws were a season-high.

The Scarlet Raiders ended the game with a huge 51-29 margin on the glass and led for better than 95 percent of the game.

Paterson shot 30.8 percent (20-for-65) from the field, 22.7 percent (5-for-22) from deep and 62.5 percent (20-for-32) from the line.

The Pioneers were led by a double-double from senior forward Bright Mensah who finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Rutgers-Newark was able to go on the first momentum-changing run of the game, outscoring the Pioneers 12-2 early in the action to turn an 8-8 tie into a 20-10 lead with a shade over 10 minutes to play in the first.

A 5-0 mini run from the Scarlet Raiders helped push the margin to 14 (30-16) with less than five minutes to go in the period, but an 8-1 rally from WPU to close the half sliced the Rutgers lead to seven after one.

An Azoroh jumper 2:33 into the second upped the Scarlet Raider lead back to 10 (37-27), and a 13-3 run featuring triples from Snow and McDaniel and nine McDaniel points overall made it a 53-35 game at the 13:17 mark, effectively putting the game out of reach.

A Mensah three-point play would trim the Rutgers-Newark lead to 11 (65-54) at the five-minute mark, but a layup from Azoroh, a stop on defense and two Snow foul shots halted any building momentum as the Scarlet Raiders cruised down the stretch.

The win over Paterson is the first for Rutgers-Newark since December 7, 2013 and snaps a three-game losing streak to the Pioneers. The Scarlet Raiders – who lost their first game of 2016 at Arcadia in overtime – have responded with two conference wins since by a combined 31 points.
