Sophomore guard Chris Green (Taunton, MA) scored a game-high 24 points, while freshman guard Jimmy Fritzson (Sharon, MA) added 15 more, as the Rhode Island College men's basketball team snapped an 11-game losing streak, by topping UMass Boston, 73-67, in Little East Conference action played at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Anchormen (2-11, 1-2 LEC) opened a seven-point lead, 18-11, following steal and layup by Green with 9:12 left in the half. The Beacons (5-8, 1-2) trimmed the deficit down to four, 24-20, on a jumper by sophomore guard Maurice Magras (Medford, MA) with 3:26 left in the frame. The Anchormen rebounded, however, and Green hit a three-pointer as time expired to send RIC into the break with an 11-point, 33-22, advantage.
 
RIC shot 45.2 percent (14-for-43) from the field in the half as Green poured in 14 points. UMB was held to just 33.3 percent (8-for-24) from the floor with with junior center Sam Freeman (Boston, MA) leading the way for the visitors with six points.
 
The Anchormen struck early and often in the second half, with a layup by freshman forward Justin Campbell (New Haven, CT) putting the hosts up by 20, 52-32, with 12:22 left in the game. The Beacons were able to use strong defense and timely three-point shooting to battle back, with a pair of late treys from senior guard Quadry Allen (White Castle, LA) cutting the lead down to seven, 71-64. Fritzson made a pair of free throws before a late three by Allen gave the game its, 73-67, final margin.
 
RIC shot 48.3 percent (29-for-60) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-for-17) from three-point range and 69.2 percent (9-for-13) from the free throw line. Green led the way with 24 points and five rebounds. Fritzson scored 15 and contributed six boards. Junior forward Terrance Tribble (White Plains, NY) corralled a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
The Beacons shot 45.5 percent (25-for-55) from the floor, 46.7 percent (7-for-15) from three-point range and 76.9 percent (10-for-13) from the charity stripe as a team. Allen led the way with 23 points. Magras chipped in with nine points and added a team-best four assists in the defeat.
 
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at home against Southern Maine on Wednesday, Jan. 13 (7:30 p.m.).
