Oxy Knocks Off CMS, Opens SCIAC 2-0

CLAREMONT — Andrew Johnson scored a game-high 27 points, Jay Miller added 20 of his own and the Occidental men's basketball team knocked off defending SCIAC Champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the road in overtime, 67-62 at Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday.

Johnson, a junior All-SCIAC selection in 2014-15, went an incredible 12 of 15 from the field, including 19 in the second half and overtime on some unguardable shots. He also snatched 12 rebounds, 11 of them at the defensive end of the court.

Johnson scored Oxy's first six points of overtime and then Miller sealed the game with four free throws for the win.

From the Coach: "It's a great team win over a very good team and to do it on the road is even more impressive," Oxy head coach Brian Newhall said. "AJ and Jay made big time plays when they had to. It's great to start 2-0, but we have a long way to go."

Andrew Garrison and Spencer Levy each chipped in five points and Kory Hamane and Jeevin Sandhuadded four off of the bench for Oxy.

Nicolas Segura led CMS with 14 points.

Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 8-3 overall and open SCIAC play 2-0. Oxy won at Redlands on Saturday.

CMS falls to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in SCIAC.
