LOS ANGELES — Spencer Levy scored 17 points, Kory Hamane added 16 and the Occidental men's basketball team opened SCIAC play with a gritty road win over Redlands, 70-66 on Saturday.
Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play.
Redlands falls to 4-6 and 0-1.
Levy and Hamane lit it up from the outside, going a combined 8 of 18 from beyond the 3-point line. Levy hit five threes, scoring 12 of his points in the first half to get Oxy out to a 33-29 lead.
Jeevin Sandhu might have had the biggest 3-pointer though late in the second half and then followed it up with a back door cut and layup to give Oxy enough breathing room to hold its lead.
Hamane went 5 of 6 from the free throw line once Redlands started fouling, including one to give Oxy a 65-56 lead, it's biggest of the game with 2:02 to play. After the Bulldogs hit three 3-pointers, Erik Eichinger iced the game with a free throw with 8 seconds to make sure Oxy kept its two possession lead.
From the Coach: "Redlands is one of the hardest and most exciting places to play in the SCIAC," Oxy head coach Brian Newhall said. "We overcame some foul trouble and injury issues tonight to pull off a good road victory.
"We're excited to get another chance on Wednesday at CMS."
Oxy guard Jay Miller had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists in 22 minutes played until leaving the game early in the second half after taking a shot to the face that knocked out his front teeth.
Andrew Johnson, Oxy's All-SCIAC forward a year ago, had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists during a mostly slow starting afternoon. The junior from Los Angeles missed most of the first half after picking up three fouls, but got big rebounds and made a few key passes out of doubles late in the game.
Oxy first year forward Austin Dewitz had a big night with a game-high 11 rebounds and four blocks to go along with five points.
Reed Hopkins led Redlands with 16 points and Blake O'Brien added 13.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday at defending SCIAC Champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
