Long wait worth it for Colby men's basketball in Florida win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Colby College men's basketball team had to wait 80 minutes past the scheduled start time to tip-off against College of St. Scholastica, but the Mules took it in stride on the way to a 93-70 non-conference victory at Ocean Center at the Land of Magic Classic on Monday.

The game was the final contest of six at the tourney, with a scheduled start time of 9 p.m. Colby, now 7-1 overall and winners of seven straight games, started at 10:20 p.m. and opened the second half at 11:10 p.m.

The Mules will look to make it eight straight victories in Tuesday's big game with 16th-ranked University of Mount Union at 9 p.m. In the first game of the night session, Mount Union took a 65-63 win over Hood in improving to 8-2 overall and winners of six straight games. The Raiders are known for winning NCAA Division III football titles (12 total).
Colby shot 63.3 percent (38-for-60) from the field, including a 73.1 percent (19-for-26) effort in the second half. The Mules also were 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from 3-point range. Colby had 23 total assists on 38 made field goals, while St. Scholastica had nine assists on 26 baskets.
Chris Hudnut was 9-for-12 from the field for a game-high 24 points, added eight rebounds, and three assists. Ryan Jann contributed 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting, while point guard Luke Westman had 12 points on 6-of-8 from the field, six rebounds, five assists, and no turnovers. Sam Willson had all 10 of his points in the first half thanks to a 4-for-4 effort. John Gallego had a game-high seven assists with just one turnover, Pat Dickert finished with eight points and three assists, and teammate Joe Connelly had seven points.
Andrew Laughlin led St. Scholastica (7-3) with 19 points. The Mules had a 42-29 rebounding advantage.
The Saints led 27-25 with 7:04 left in the opening half. The game was tied for the sixth time with 5:53 to go at 29-29. Colby used a 15-7 run the rest of the way to go up 44-36 at the break.
St. Scholastica only got to within seven points early in the second half, but Colby dominated from that point. With the score 48-41, Westman hit two jumpers, Jann added a 3-point shot, and
Hudnut scored inside for a 57-43 margin. The Mules twice got up by 23 points, including the final score.
