ROSEMONT – The Rosemont Ravens men's basketball team (5-4) were defeated on their home court this afternoon by the visiting Ursinus College Bears (2-5) by a final score of 92-68.
The physically taller and bigger Bears muscled in under the glass to out-rebound the Ravens by a count of 44-26 overall. Ursinus also shot 59% from the floor, 45% (9-for-20) from beyond the arc.
Although the Ravens were careful with the ball, committing half of the number of turnovers that Ursinus committed (7 vs. 14), Rosemont could not keep a comeback rally going after making a game of it later in the second half.
The Ravens went up 4-1 early, their largest lead of the game after a Kyle Lafferty layup with just over a minute gone. Ursinus' Malik Draper would drain a trey to knot the game and the Bears would put together an 18-4 run to take control of the game, leading 19-8 with 12:15 left in the half. Ursinus would up their lead to 15 points, 32-17 with 6:48 remaining in the period and would go into the break with a 46-32 lead.
Rosemont came out strongly to start the second half, scoring the first eight points to get to within 46-40 with 17:33 left. But from that point Ursinus would again open up the game, taking a 15-point lead, 63-48 with 13:47 remaining. The Ravens would again put together a rally to get to within seven points, trailing 67-60 with 7:40 left, but the Bears would put away the game with an 11-0 run to take a 79-60 lead with just over five minutes left on the clock.
Marcus Thomas led the Ravens with 17 points. Kyle Lafferty (14) and Khai Roberts (10) also scored in double-digits for Rosemont. Jamier Hughes led the Ravens with six rebounds.
Ursinus' Matt Knowles tied his career-high in scoring with 26 points to lead both teams. Joe LoStracco was strong underneath, scoring 21 with nine boards on 9-for-10 shooting from the field. Remi Janicot added 12 points with seven boards. Mark Wonderling scored eight with nine boards and six assists.
The Ravens will enjoy their holiday break and prepare to play again on Saturday, 1/2/2016, when they travel to Johns Hopkins University to face Hampden-Sydney College in the opening round of the Blue Jay Invitational.
