More news about: Lewis and Clark

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Jason Luhnow scored 26 points, one of three Lewis & Clark players in double figures, as the Pioneers won their opening game, 66-62 over Redlands, at the Mission Inn Kickoff Classic.

The Pios held a 13-point lead with 9:57 left in the second half before Redlands closed back within two points with less than two minutes remaining. Luhnow and Markel Leonard made free throws down the stretch to seal the win for Lewis & Clark.

In addition to Luhnow, Leonard finished as one of three Pios in double figures, scoring 11 points. He was followed by Cannen Roberson's 10 points and six rebounds. Jonathan Boddie shot 4 of 7 from the floor to score nine points while pulling down eight rebounds. Alex Jones was Lewis & Clark's leading rebounder with nine.

Lewis & Clark shot nearly 40 percent in the first half, as Luhnow made all three of the Pios' 3-pointers in the half, on his way to 13 points by halftime.

Redlands maintained the lead in the first five minutes of game, jumping ahead 10-4. The teams exchanged leads through the middle part of the first half before Nate Battisti's lay-up with 4:38 remaining gave Redlands a 27-24 advantage.

Behind scoring from Luhnow and Leonard, the Pios finished the half on a 12-3 run to lead at halftime 36-30.

In the second, Redlands missed 6 of its first 8 shots as Lewis & Clark ballooned its lead to game-high 56-43 just past the halfway mark of the second period.

10 straight points by Kyle Husslein and Blake O'Brien initiated the Redlands comeback, closing the deficit to three points in under three minutes. Lewis & Clark, which shot 26 percent in the second half, went nearly five minutes without a field goal.

While Luhnow buried a 3-pointer with 5:02 remaining to stop the Pios' drought, it was Lewis & Clark's final field goal of the game. The Pioneers made 4 of 8 free throws down the stretch to hold on and win.

Redlands' Al Bjekovic led all scorers with 22 points to go with six rebounds and five assists. O'Brien and Husslein finished with 10 and nine points, respectively.

The teams ended the game with identical field goal percentages (33 percent) with Lewis & Clark outshooting Redlands 29 to 23 percent from three-point range. The Pioneers went 14 of 24 from the free-throw line, while Redlands shot 12 of 17.

Lewis & Clark, which led the nation in rebounding margin last season, won the battle on the glass 53-44, even though Redlands held a 16-13 edge in second chance points. The Pios were better on the fastbreak, outscoring Redlands 18-8.

Mat Collins was Lewis & Clark's leading bench scorer with four points to go with four rebounds. Freshman Kupa'a Harrison had six rebounds in 13 minutes of reserve time.
