Cortland Men Beat SUNY Poly, 77-64, to Close First Semester

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) led three Cortland double-figure scorers with 15 points as the Red Dragons improved to 7-1 with a 77-64 win over visiting SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

Seniors Grequan Carter (Queens/Campus Magnet) and JP Reagan (Cortland) added 13 points apiece for Cortland. Carter also led the team with six rebounds. Junior Michael Kelly (Monroe/Burke Catholic) added nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and senior Shayne Martinez (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) scored eight points.

Peyton Griffiths led SUNY Poly (3-6) with a game-high 27 points. He hit 9-of-17 field goals and 8-of-10 from the foul line. Malik Johnson scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Tyler Taverne paced the Wildcats with 10 rebounds. Michael Boyea finished with five assists and three steals and Griffiths handed out three assists.

Cortland shot 51 percent from the floor despite being held to just 24 percent (4-of-17) from the 3-point arc. SUNY Poly hit 42 percent of its shots overall, but only 14 percent (2-of-14) from long distance.

Cortland led 23-12 with 9:03 left in the first half after a T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) layup, and the Red Dragons held a double-figure lead the rest of the game. Cortland was up 47-29 at halftime.

SUNY Poly closed to within 13 twice in the first four minutes of the second half, but Cortland used a 21-6 run to take a 72-44 lead with 7:45remaining. The lead was still 28 at 75-47 with just over five minutes left before the guests finished the game on a 17-2 run to create the final 13-point margin.

Cortland will return to action on January 2 at 1 p.m. with a non-league game at Medaille.
