Seniors Spark North Central Men's Win over Hartwick

Showing no ill effects from its travel, the North Central College men's basketball team opened play in the HoopMIA Holiday Shootout in grand style on Friday, enjoying its best outside shooting effort of the season and getting breakout performances from its seniors in a 84-67 victory over Hartwick College (Rhode Island) at Florida Christian School.

Seniors Jayme Moten and Kevin Honn combined for 49 points. Moten scored a season-high 25 points and made 6 of 7 three-point shots, while Honn put up career highs of 24 points and 14 rebounds, making 10 of 13 shots from the floor. The Cardinals shot 60 percent (12 of 20) from beyond the three-point arc in the game.

North Central (5-3) never trailed in the game, opening the contest with an 8-2 run including two three-pointers from Moten. The Hawks tied the score at 12-12 following Trevor Norton's three-pointer with 11:49 on the clock before Honn responded with two straight buckets, scoring off a pass from Connor Raridon and taking a rebound coast to coast for a fast-break layup. 

Leading, 18-16, the Cardinals embarked on a 13-0 run over the course of four minutes, getting three-pointers from Moten, Honn and Aiden Chang, to extend the lead to 15 points at 31-16. Moten came up with a steal and layup just before the halftime buzzer sounded, sending North Central into the break with a 46-29 advantage. 

The Cardinals led by as many as 23 points in the second half and were never threatened, as Moten made a perfect 4 of 4 shots from the floor in the final 20 minutes. Moten became the 10th player in North Central history to make at least 100 career three-pointers (103).

Raridon finished with 12 points and a game-high six assists for North Central, while Chang scored 11 points and Alex Sorenson turned in a season-high four blocked shots. Hartwick (4-4) was led by Matt Wilson's 22 points and eight rebounds. 

North Central takes on Centre College (6-1) in its final game at the Shootout on Saturday, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Eastern time.
