SVC stays unbeaten in PAC play with win over Chatham

The Saint Vincent men's basketball team defeated Chatham University by a score of 82-63 in the Carey Center to stay undefeated in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

Freshman Mike Simmons, making his first collegiate start, put the Bearcats on the board first as he sank a three pointer just two minutes into the game making the score 3-0 SVC. Austin Dedert drew fouls under the basket on consecutive possessions, hitting three of his free throws, followed by a Jaylon Bell and one lay in to extend the Bearcats' lead to seven with 16:06 left in the half.
 
Senior Bobby Swartwout found his way into the SVC offense, working the post and scoring down low before classmate Dan Sinwell hit a trey, giving the Bearcats a 16-7 lead. Simmons made another open three and Swartwout connected on two free throws to grow the SVC lead to 24-11 with a little over 8 minutes left in the half. Following Swartwout's free throws, the Cougars went on a lengthy 13-2 run, coming within two points of the lead making the score 26-24 SVC.
 
After a DP Harris timeout, the Bearcat offense began to click, as Bell scored on a fast break lay up. Bell missed the and-one opportunity but went on to hit two free throws on the next possession making the score 30-24 Bearcats. Swartwout banked a deep three and Austin Ford scored off a Bell assist to once again give the Bearcats a double-digit lead. Bell went on to sink a trey of his own and Dedert scored on a putback to send SVC into the locker room leading the Cougars by a score of 44-32.
 
For the Bearcats, Bell and Swartwout each scored 10 first-half points. For Chatham, Nasir Alexander netted a team high 9 points.
 
Senior guard Pat Jones sparked the Bearcats after the intermission, scoring on a fast break layup followed by a drive and finger roll giving SVC a 48-34 lead with 17:54 left in the contest. Ben Klimchock converted an and-one opportunity and Jones hit a jumper in the lane making the score 53-41, Saint Vincent. Dedert scored on a near dunk and Swartwout made one free throw before the Cougars salvaged a 6-0 run, cutting the lead to single digits.
 
With less then 10 minutes remaining in the game, Bell converted consecutive lay ins giving the Bearcats a 66-52 lead. Bell continued to find the hoop, drawing fouls on back-to-back possessions. Bell netted all four shots from the line, making the score 72-57 Saint Vincent. Sinwell connected on his second three of the night and classmate Kyle Rivera made two free throws, rounding out the offense as the Bearcats earned a 82-63 conference victory.
 
For Saint Vincent, Bell and Swartwout both had double-doubles, as Bell scored 18 points and grabbed 11 boards while Swartwout netted 13 and hauled in 10 rebounds. For Chatham, Alexander scored 11 and Anthony Bomar scored 11 while grabbing 6 boards.

Saint Vincent concludes the fall semester portion of the schedule with an overall record of 5-2, 3-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.  Next up for the team are three games in Las Vegas, part of the d3hoops.com Classic, beginning December 27 against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.  The game will tip at 11PM Eastern at the South Point Hotel & Casino.
