Privateers Falter against Lehman in Non-Conference Finale

BRONX, N.Y. – The Maritime Basketball team wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a road contest against Lehman College on Wednesday night, the Privateers fell to the Lightning by the score of 90-67.
 
In the game, sophomore John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had 21 points to lead the way and was also second on the team with six rebounds. Classmate Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) added 17 points, while also pulling down four boards on the evening.
 
Junior Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) led the team with eight boards and added seven points of his own, while junior Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) chipped in with eight points and six rebounds. Freshman Pat Conway (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) scored six points, while junior Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) had seven points and a team-best four assists.
 
Liccese got Maritime started in the first half with a three-point basket, followed by a MacDonald jumper to thrust Maritime ahead by a 5-0 score. Lehman answered back and tied the game at nine but the Privateers surged ahead again.
 
MacDonald connected on a layup followed by a jumper from Liccese and a layup by Hayes to give Maritime a 15-9 advantage. After exchanging baskets, Hoch stepped back for a three-pointer to give the Privateers a 20-13 lead with 11:38 to go in the opening period.
 
Maritime added to its lead as Liccese sank a layup and hit the ensuing free throw to give the Privateers their largest lead of the night at 24-14 with 9:39 to go in the half. Lehman scored the next eight points, but Liccese answered with a three-point shot to give Maritime a five-point lead.
 
Both teams exchanged free throws over the portion of the half, before Lehman tied the contest at 29 with a layup. Conway gave the Privateers the lead once again with a three-pointer with 3:44 left in the half.
 
The lead was exchanged three more times through the remainder of the period, with Lehman taking a six-point lead into the locker room for halftime.
 
After leading 42-36 at the half, Lehman score the first nine points of the second half to take a 15-point lead. The Lightning increased their lead to 19 with 11:44 to go in the game, but Maritime responded as Halligan dropped back for a three-point basket followed by a free throw for the four-point play.
 
Maritime was able to cut the lead down to 12 with a MacDonald free throw at 12:00, but that was as close as the Privateers got as Lehman went on to win at 90-67.
 
The Privateers (0-5) will travel to Old Westbury on Saturday at 12 p.m. from Long Island for its Skyline-opening contest with the Panthers from the Clark Athletic Center.
