HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin men's basketball team picked up its second win of the weekend, defeating Wheaton 79-66 at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse. The game was part of the second day of action of the Midwest Challenge with teams from Hope and Carthage also competing.

Calvin (4-3) fell behind 9-2 in the opening minutes of Saturday's game but after a timeout, regrouped to forge a 27-25 lead on a three-pointer by sophomore Tony Canonie with 5:38 left in the first half. The triple by Canonie was part of an 18-5 run to end the half for the Knights.

Calvin led throughout the second half, building a 49-36 lead  on a layup by sophomore Mike Siegel with 14:32 remaining.

Wheaton (3-4) fought back to close to within five at 53-48 and 55-50 but a triple by Calvin sophomore Michael Wilks put the Knights up 58-50. Wheaton got no closer than seven points the rest of the way with Calvin extending its lead to as much as 17 points on a triple by Wilks with 5:21 to go.

Calvin was led by senior Jordan Daley who pumped in 24 points to go with six rebounds while Wilks had a career-high 19 points.

Ricky Samuelson had 19 points to lead Wheaton. Michael Berg and Jonathan Berntsen added 16 points apiece.

Calvin was 10 of 23 from three-point range in the win including 15 of 16 at the charity stripe. Calvin also held a 33-29 rebounding advantage.

"We came out slow and that was a little disappointing because before we got on the bus this morning, we discuss coming out with energy right away," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "After we called that first timeout, we got our focus together and from there it was just a lot of fun. We played hard and got after it on the boards and on defense. It was a collective team effort with different guys stepping up. The more this team plays, the more comfortable the guys will get with one another."

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Grace Bible at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
