Buena Vista drops Blue Devils with hot long range shooting

MENOMONIE (December 5, 2015) - Buena Vista University found their range from downtown and their downtown was back in Storm Lake, Iowa, as the visiting Beavers hit 14 3-point shots to down UW-Stout, 96-80, Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Buena Vista (2-4) connected on 4-of-14 (.286) long range shots in the first half, but warmed up and hit 10-of-14 (.714) in the second half.

But it was the Blue Devils (2-4) that took an early lead, jumping out to a 14-6 lead in the first six minutes of the game, then by as much as a 10 point, 23-13 lead at the eight minute mark. Buena Vista went on a 10-1 run to tie the score at 24 apiece with four minute left in the half.

A lay-up by Colton Williams (So, Columbia Heights, Minn) and a free throw by Keegan Dickson (Fr, Apple Valley, Minn) would give Stout a 29-26 lead at the 3:19 mark. The Beavers tied the score on a 3-pointer by Kyler Huisman, then finished the half on a 9-3 run, including a buzzer beater by Kennedy Drey to make it 38-32 at halftime.

Buena Vista built as much as a 24 point lead in the second half.

The Blue Devils' John Keefe (So, Medford) led all scorers with 24 points, going 9-of-16 from the field, 4-of-9 from 3-point range and 2-of-4 from the line. Keefe also had a game-high six assists, pulled down five rebounds and added a steal.

Joen Patterson (So, Lauderdale, Minn) added a career-best 19 points and Justin Thomas (Fr, Eleva) came off the bench to score a career-best 13 points.

The Beavers had four players in double digits, led by Thomas Wisecup's 17 points. Sean Morgan was perfect from the field in seven attempts and scored 16 points. Bobby Ivey and Kennedy Drey added 13 points. Wisecup and Drey each dropped in three 3-pointers.

The Blue Devils return to action Tuesday, Dec. 8 when they travel to the University of Dubuque.
